How I went from a balding man to a guy with a good head of hair

I was about 22 years old w  hen I started having thinning of my hair. Not much, barely noticeable. I did not pay much attention to it . Then one day,  I went to a party and a drunk ass**** yelled out  “who called this 40 year old man to our party “

Over a period of time, my hairline had receded so much that it made me look 20 years older. I was obsessed with it now. I wanted to stop it. I tried everything- new shampoos and hair products- it just made it worse. I considered prescription medicines but was reluctant because of the side effects (especially ED!!). Research shows that women prefer men with a full head of hair over male pattern baldness (MPB). My dating life suffered as well. I had lost my confidence due to the hair loss. I read a lot of stuff on the internet and saw a bunch of doctors. I heard a lot of different things and most of them, if done right, may help. But they were either too cumbersome or expensive or just not practical. After extensive research, I chose these simple steps and kept repeating them.   Just as I had lost my hair at a slow and steady pace, now I was getting it back. I still have quite a bit of MPB, but the hair that I have is more full and looks great.

These are the things that worked for me.

  1. Start taking a multivitamin with high biotin content like this
  2. Shampoo and condition twice a week. Before you shampoo, treat your scalp with coconut oil mixed with powdered multivitamin. Leave it on for a couple of hours before shampooing. I use American crew hair growth shampoo and conditioner. When washing your hair, do not use your palms but use the tips of your fingers. During showering, use lukewarm water. Water that is too hot or too cold will wash away the essentials oils from your scalp and leave it dry.
  3. Scalp massage twice a day. I usually do it while showering, but that is not necessary. To massage your scalp, you need to use your finger pads. Dig deep into one area of the scalp with both hands. Stretch the skin of the scalp and then pinch the scalp with. You will feel your scalp more oily after doing this as it will express the sebum out of hair follicles. Your scalp skin will also feel loose. You can use rosemarry or peppermint oil to massage your scalp if you like. Do this 5-10 minutes twice a day. Reference with more details:  http://jdmoyer.com/2015/04/13/hair/
  4. Do not brush your hair immediately after showering. Limit use of hair dryer and hair products
  5.  Drink plenty of water daily, avoid high sugar/carb diet, stop smoking and exercise.

I am still experimenting with these and other different things. Anything worth having doesn’t come easy. You will need patience and consistent effort for this to work, It may or may not help everyone but I think its worth trying. I have heard drugs like propecia and rogaine work as well but I have not experienced it.

I never knew if these things are working for me until my friends (especially women) started commenting on my hair regrowth. So I do not have specific pictures of my hairline, just cropped pics from my old photographs.

  1. Thanks for sharing this and especially for including your pictures! Fantastic progress.

The head massage technique can really work (especially for guys I think, who are more likely to have thickened, partially calcified scalps). They key is persistence — the technique takes a LONG time to work. Five months of twice-day a massage before I saw significant regrowth.

    1. Hi, I sometimes used oil to massage my scalp but me at if the time, I just do it while in shower with lukewarm water pouring on my hand. That way, I don’t have to set aside a special time to massage twice daily. Hope this helps you. Thanks

  4. Yeah, thanks for sharing this. Since a month I already started with a daily scalp massage, after reading J.D. Moyer’s blog article. Your reports are looking really promising. I think, I will also add a high biotin product to my therapy, as described from you. Makes definitely sense to me 🙂

Btw. I also would like to share something. Since I have a hard time pinching my scalp on some parts, I was looking for a technical support. Just today I received this scalp massager ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BXM5RG6 ). Don’t know whether this was directly made for a the scalp massage technique you guys described, but it fits perfectly. Pinching my scalp works much easier and it feels much more intense. I really recommend that! 🙂

  5. Hey, that’s some really amazing progress there, awesome job!

Can I ask about your specific detumescence therapy technique? Everyone and their mother is arguing and worrying about whether or not they’re doing it right, can I ask you to share a bit more info on it please? I’m mostly using two hands

    Thanks, and congrats

    1. I don’t think there is one right method. The idea is to express cebum from the hair follicle and improve blood circulation. There is age old practice in India to massage scalp with natural oils and women there swear by it. I never believed in it until recently.

What I do is use both my hands during my morning and evening shower. Dig my finger tips in the parts of my scalp with MPB, stretch the skin and then pinch it to express cebum. I feel some greasiness after doing this for few minutes. I keep doing this for 5-7 min in different parts.

Just like everything else worth having, it requires consistency and patience. Hope it helps.

      1. Thanks, I have been on DT for about 3.5 months, lots of shedding but that could be just normal MPB, I have photos but only from about a month ago, I’ll be sure to track my progress. I press with a lot of force, and my scalp is much, much looser, and my widow’s peak used to have a super hard completely immobile bulge, and now it’s just like normal skin!

      2. It’s just that I’m completely paranoid about my hair loss and worried that if I do it wrong I might actually damage the hair follicle somehow, since I used to use a lot of really deep pressure, but JD Moyer got results and he said he pressed really hard, and so did you, so I shouldn’t worry. I’m also using pure MSM powder in a topical hair spray when I shower, apple cider vinegar, Tom Hagerty’s scalp exercises, and some supplements, and I’m really starting to think vitamin D deficiency might be to blame…Anyway thanks again looking forward to updates!

  6. Oh, I forgot to add, sorry, but how hard do you press down with your fingers, if that makes sense? I understand pretty much every part of the technique but this one evades me.

    1. I tend to use a lot of downward pressure to flatten the ridges in my scalp and get lymph moving, but this is the part that worries me most, using too much pressure. It doesn’t hurt though, just makes my head kind of feel relaxed, like it’s going to float away

      1. I feel the same way when I massage. The head feels relaxed. I had headaches after massage initially but they have resolved now. Make sure you do not break skin as that may cause scarring and hair loss but otherwise, the more the pressure, the better.

  7. Thanks man, appreciate it.

I think it’s really worth mentioning that I made serious gains in scalp laxity (or maybe the better word is losses, lol) when I learned to finally relax my eyebrows. I had social anxiety and would have my frontalis muscles contracted all the time in an effort to look “happy”, when in reality it just made me look surprised all the time. I do Tom Hagerty’s scalp exercises a lot so those two muscle groups are completely under my control.

    Thanks again.

  8. could anybody give me a detail in scalp messaging. Like i know i need to knead, squeeze etc. But i want to know in detail to avoid mistakes.

    1. Apply some oil, serum or lukewarm water on your skalp. Use both your hands to massage. First press the skin with your finger tips. Apply good pressure with the balls of the fingers (not nails). Then without lifting the fingers, move the skin fold of the skalp back and forth for a few seconds with the finger tips. Lift your fingers and do it on next spot. Try to cover all areas of skalp with thinning or lost hair.

I had a little more hair loss and mild headaches first few weeks, then it got better

  9. Thanks for your post. I’ve just recently started scalp massages for hair loss. I’ve found whilst I can pinch on the lateral sides of my scalp (though I still use two hands), I find it impossible to pinch down on the centreline of the scalp. Indeed, I have quite the thickening of tissue here. Is the best approach here to knead the scalp, to push from either side of the centreline, until the scalp develops the appropriate flexibility/laxity to do the pinching massage? Your thoughts would be truly appreciated.

As a further aside, I’ve also been using the essential oil approach (rosemary and lavender, in a grapeseed carrier (33% each)), and I’ve started to see the first signs of regrowth as well after 6 months. There’s clearly something that works in the essential oils………

    1. Hi Greg, yes, that is right. The less flexible the skin is, the more time it will take with scalp massage to get it softer and let the hair grow. I generally leave the oil that comes out there.

    1. Longer actually. Cant remember how long I have been doing it now. Just something I have formed a habit of. Whenever I am putting oil, shampooing, clean or doing anything with touching my head, I go ahead and massage it. No thoughts give.

I’d love to exchange a few emails. How can I reach you?

I look forward to your continued recovery.

  11. Hi, I first noticed my hair loss after a depressive stage in my life at 16, but stabilized for the next few years following that. And now, after graduation, it is evident that my hair significantly thinned all around the top of the head simultaneously. I have tried onion juice, coconut oil, and (rosemary+peppermint) essential oils; the latter seemed to make it worse, because I had a lone hair on my right temple, and I literally watched it get thinner and eventually disappeared in the space of less than 1 month. My head looks thinner than at the tender age of early 20s. I can’t tell if its the essential oil not working, or if I am using it too much? (only once a day, 1 teaspoon of coconut oil with 4 drops of each essential oil, and I can definitely feel the sensation on my scalp too!).
I am keen to try this scalp massage technique out, is it better to leave the coconut oil and essential oils out then?

I have tried this scalp massage technique for a few weeks, and I can instantly feel my head feeling more oily. Do I simply leave the expressed oils on my scalp, or am I supposed to wipe it with something or rinse with water? I’d appreciate any advice on the above questions. Many thanks in advance.

  13. Hi Sir,
Thanks for sharing, you made me hopefully..
I have a question: are you use just Rosemary oil or you mix it with other oils? What oil should I mix with Rosemary oil? I mean what carrier oil?
    Thanks,
    Hoda
